Which school district serves Temecula, Murrieta and Menifee?
Off base, your kids go to the public school tied to your home address. In Temecula, California, that is usually Temecula Valley Unified. In Murrieta, it is usually Murrieta Valley Unified. In Menifee, the younger grades go to Menifee Union School District and the high schools belong to Perris Union High School District. Now, here is the part that trips people up, right? District lines and city limits are not the same thing. So the city on the listing is a starting point, not the answer.
This table puts the districts next to the two numbers Marine families ask about first: how far the drive is to the Main Gate and what homes have been selling for.
| City | Public school district(s) | Grades | Size, per the district | Road miles to the Main Gate | Median sale price, 3 months ending Aug 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temecula | Temecula Valley Unified | TK to 12 | 30 schools in its directory | About 30 miles | About $735,000 |
| Murrieta | Murrieta Valley Unified | Preschool to 12 | About 21,700 students | About 38 miles | About $655,000 |
| Menifee | Menifee Union (TK to 8), Perris Union High (9 to 12) | TK to 12 across two districts | Menifee Union: over 12,000 students | About 51 miles | About $575,000 |
Sources: each district's own website (October 2026), Redfin median sale price for all home types in the three months ending August 2026, and road miles to the Camp Pendleton Main Gate off Interstate 5. In Menifee, Perris Union High School District's Heritage High School and Paloma Valley High School both have Menifee addresses.
One more thing on the money side. Your BAH does not change with the school district you pick. It follows your rank, your dependency status and your duty station. Our Camp Pendleton BAH guide shows what the 2026 rates roughly cover in each of these three cities.

How do you look up the assigned school for a specific address?
Every one of these districts has a free address lookup. Run it on any house before you write an offer, and run it again if you are comparing two homes a few streets apart.
- Temecula Valley Unified: the School Site Locator. Type the full street address, including Street, Road or Avenue, and it lists the elementary, middle and high school for that address. The district says the map pin may not be exactly on point, but the schools of attendance it lists are accurate. If something looks off, the district's Facilities department is the contact.
- Murrieta Valley Unified: the Find My School map lookup, linked from the top of the district homepage.
- Menifee Union (TK to 8): the Find Your School page, which takes your home address and also shows elementary and middle school boundary maps.
- Perris Union High (9 to 12): the Find Your School tool, run by an outside vendor called GeoSpective Technologies.
Boundaries do move. Menifee Union's board approved new boundaries on December 13, 2022, for the Kathryn Newport Middle School attendance area, and they took effect July 1, 2023. That is a real example of why a lookup from a few years ago is not good enough. If a house sits near a line, call the district and confirm it in writing.
Want a different school than the one assigned? That is a transfer request, and it has its own calendar. Murrieta Valley Unified, for example, opened its intradistrict transfer window on November 3 for the 2026 to 2027 school year, with a February 20, 2026 deadline, and says requests after that depend on space and are not guaranteed. New students there are automatically assigned to their home school.
When should you enroll your kids if you have PCS orders?
As soon as you know your address, and California lets you start before you get here. Under Education Code 48204.3, a child whose parent is transferred or pending transfer to a military installation in California meets the district's residency requirement. The district has to accept enrollment and course registration online. You then have 10 days after the arrival date on your orders to show proof of residence in the district.
That proof can be any of these, per the statute:
- A temporary on-base billeting facility
- A purchased or leased home or apartment
- Federal government or public-private venture off-base military housing
So you do not have to close on a house in Murrieta before your kids get a seat. You can get the paperwork moving while you are still house hunting, as long as you can show a district address within that window.
How each district handles new students right now:
- Temecula Valley Unified uses an online pre-enrollment form through its Centralized Enrollment Center, and it is accepting applications for the 2026 to 2027 school year. An enrollment technician follows up by email, so check your spam folder. The center also takes appointments at (951) 506-7937.
- Murrieta Valley Unified says new students may enroll throughout the year, with no cut-off dates or deadlines for new student enrollment.
- Menifee Union and Perris Union High both post enrollment pages on their district sites. Menifee families can deal with two districts, so do both at the same time if you have kids on both sides of 8th grade.
If you are buying, line this up with your loan timeline. Our VA loan guide for Riverside County walks through the steps from the COE to closing, so you can see where enrollment fits.
What does the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children cover?
The Compact is an agreement every state has adopted to make school moves easier for military kids. California adopted it in October 2009, and it sits in Education Code sections 49700 to 49703. It applies to children of active-duty members of the uniformed services, including National Guard and Reserve on active duty orders under Title 10, plus a one-year window after a medical discharge, retirement or death on active duty.
| Issue | What the Compact says |
|---|---|
| School records | The new school enrolls and places your child using hand-carried, unofficial records while the official ones are requested. The old school sends official records within 10 days or a reasonable time set by the Commission. |
| Immunizations | Your child gets 30 calendar days from enrollment to get required shots, or to start a series. |
| Kindergarten and grade level | A child can continue in the same grade they were enrolled in at the old school, regardless of age. A kindergartner must have been enrolled and attending in the sending state. |
| Course placement | The new school has flexibility to waive course and program prerequisites. |
| Graduation | Specific required courses are waived if similar coursework was completed. A senior who transfers can get a diploma from the old school if they meet its requirements. |
| Extracurriculars | Inbound military kids get the chance to take part in activities if qualified. |

How can the Camp Pendleton School Liaison Program help?
The School Liaison Program is a free Marine Corps resource for families with kids in preK through 12th grade. The Marine Corps describes its job as giving families information about school options and transitions, keeping direct contact with school and district staff, and helping solve education problems for military-connected kids.
The Camp Pendleton office is in Building 1160, Room 281, on base. You can reach it at 760-763-7385 or 760-763-7386, or by email at [email protected]. Its local enrollment list includes all three Riverside County districts above, so you are not on your own just because you live inland.
On the district side, Murrieta Valley Unified runs a Military Support Advisory Committee, started in 2010, and names military liaisons on its Military Families page. Temecula Valley Unified's enrollment pages do not list a military contact, so start with the School Liaison Office or call the district office at (951) 676-2661 and ask who handles military families at your school.
How can you check school information without relying on rankings?
I am going to be brutally honest here. I am a real estate agent, not a school rater, and I am not going to tell you which school is better. What I can do is point you to the official sources the state and the districts publish, so you can read them yourself.
- California School Dashboard at caschooldashboard.org. This is the state's official report on how each school and district is doing on measures like test results, graduation and chronic absenteeism.
- School Accountability Report Cards (SARC). California public schools publish one each year, and the districts link them from their sites.
- California Purple Star list. The Department of Education designates schools that meet set supports for military-connected students. The list updated February 27, 2026 shows 11 in Temecula Valley Unified and 10 in Murrieta Valley Unified. Schools apply for it, so a school that is not on the list may simply not have applied.
- Visit and ask. Call the front office and ask about the programs your kids need and how the school handles mid-year arrivals.
Websites that score schools with stars or letter grades use their own formulas. Read the official data first, then decide what matters for your family.
